In the early 1980s, Juan Atkins, Derrick May and Kevin Saunderson from were friends at Belleville High School - in a rural area outside of Detroit. The three got seriously into electronic dance music, and influenced each other - and eventually together, they invented "Detroit Techno" at roughly the same time as the birth of acid house in Chicago.

In 1987, Kevin Saunderson teamed up with gospel vocalist Paris Grey, formed Inner City, and recorded a track called "Big Fun." It was picked up on a British complilation album called "Techno - The New Dance Sound of Detroit" and was a huge global dance hit.

"Good Life" was released in 1988 as a follow-up, hit # 4 on the UK charts, and became one of the biggest dance anthems of the late 1980s.
